As part of ongoing efforts to monitor the quality of services provided to citizens across various public transportation systems, and coinciding with the start of the 2026/2027 academic year, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, accompanied by Eng. Wagdy Radwan, Deputy Minister of Transport for Electric Traction and Railways, and Major General Tarek Goweily, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, conducted an inspection tour of the East Nile Monorail project.
The tour aimed to monitor the regularity of operations, assess the level of services provided to passengers, and ensure the readiness and smooth operation of the system in line with the expected increase in passenger demand during the new academic year.
During the tour, the minister reviewed the regularity of monorail services, the readiness of stations, cleanliness levels, and passenger services, as well as the readiness of operating and emergency teams and the implementation of security and safety measures to ensure a safe, reliable, and high-quality service for passengers.
El-Wazir stressed the need to maintain regular operating schedules and increase the number of services to cope with any expected passenger congestion during peak hours. He also called for intensified security and safety measures and full coordination with the Transport and Communications Police throughout operating hours, stressing the importance of immediately addressing any issues or emergencies that could affect service regularity.
The Minister of Transport also stressed the continuation of field monitoring of service quality and raising the readiness level of emergency teams to respond immediately to any malfunctions, ensuring the regular operation of the monorail service and preventing disruptions for passengers while maintaining the highest standards of efficiency and operational performance.
The Minister directed the chairman and officials of the National Authority for Tunnels to reduce the headway between monorail trains to 9 minutes instead of 12 minutes, with implementation beginning yesterday, September 14, 2026.
He also directed the issuance of student passes for the East Nile Monorail and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) at a 60% discount on ticket prices, with the new fares to take effect starting tomorrow.
It is worth noting that the scheduled number of daily trips on the East Nile Monorail is 142, with operations beginning at 6:00 a.m. from both Adala City and Cairo Stadium stations. The last train departs from both stations at 7:50 p.m., while the headway is currently 12 minutes.
The East Nile Monorail project extends from Cairo Stadium Station in Nasr City to Adala City Station in the New Capital. It comprises 22 stations. Subscription offices are available at the ticket windows at all East Nile Monorail stations, with passes sold throughout daily operating hours, making it easier for passengers to access the service and enhancing the convenience of using the monorail as one of Egypt’s modern public transportation systems.
