Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber stated that the presidential initiative “Greening Cairo,” announced by President Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi and directed by Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouli during today’s meeting, will be implemented through a scientifically designed plan. The plan will rely on experts and specialists in afforestation to select Tree species adapted to Egypt’s climate, with a focus on shade‑providing trees that consume minimal water.
Moreover, a strategy will also be developed to select trees that match the nature of streets, road axes, and squares, ensuring resilience to climatic conditions while enhancing environmental and visual benefits.
Governor Saber added that community‑based participatory initiatives will be launched to involve citizens and civil society in tree‑planting and expanding green spaces. Shop owners and property holders will be encouraged to plant trees in front of their shops and buildings, with planting and maintenance organized in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Saber further said that focus will be placed on planting along major roads, road axes, and squares, as trees are a key element in improving air quality and reducing pollution. Green spaces will be expanded along traffic corridors to enhance the urban landscape, provide shade, and lower temperatures.
Saber added that all unused vacant plots of land will be surveyed to assess their potential for conversion into parks and green areas to serve citizens, with priority given to neighborhoods suffering from a shortage of green spaces, high population density, and heavy traffic pollution.
The governor added that a well‑defined mechanism will be established for the maintenance and irrigation of trees and parks after planting to ensure sustainability and prevent initiatives from becoming temporary efforts. The plan will expand the use of modern irrigation systems and treated water to preserve resources and reduce consumption.
Finally, the governor stressed the importance of engaging the local community in protecting and preserving trees, considering this a shared responsibility between executive bodies and citizens.
Tree‑planting will be linked to a comprehensive plan aimed at improving quality of life, enhancing the city’s civilized image, reducing pollution, and improving the urban environment.
