The Egyptian Drug Authority confirmed that all registered insulin types and preparations currently marketed in Egypt remain available, and that there is no decision to halt the importation of any type of insulin.
The authority explained—in a statement issued Wednesday evening—that the arrangements concerning the supply of certain imported insulin preparations to government entities are part of government procurement and purchasing policies aimed at reducing reliance on imported products for items that now have sufficient local alternatives in terms of quantities and the capacity to meet the needs of the government sector. This does not, in any way, mean that the importation of these preparations has been halted or that their circulation in the Egyptian market has been prohibited.
The authority also confirmed the continued supply of various insulin preparations—both locally manufactured and imported—to the government sector according to actual needs, including certain long-acting and rapid-acting insulin preparations.
The Egyptian Drug Authority stressed that increasing reliance on local production does not mean closing the door to imports. Rather, it is part of the state’s strategy to strengthen local manufacturing while maintaining a range of alternatives with the same established efficiency, effectiveness, and internationally approved quality standards for both locally manufactured and imported preparations, ensuring the sustainable availability of all essential and vital medicines.
The authority is continuously monitoring the availability of insulin and its supply chains, in coordination with relevant authorities as well as manufacturing and importing companies, to ensure the continued supply of patients’ needs across different insulin preparations.
The authority reiterated that there is no decision to halt the importation of any type of insulin, and that all imported products will continue to be available in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and procedures.
