The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, stated that the “Cairo 2026" Games will not be limited to sporting competitions, but will serve as a comprehensive platform for cultural, artistic, and tourism exchange between Egypt and the participating African countries, reflecting Egypt’s soft power and opening a new window to showcase Egyptian civilization.
Abdel Ghaffar said in a statement released on Sunday that the event, organized in cooperation between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the African University Sports Federation, and the Egyptian University Sports Federation, will see the participation of 18 African countries and around 2,000 male and female athletes representing various African universities.
Abdel Ghaffar also said that the accompanying program, scheduled to run from September 8 to 16, includes numerous activities beyond the sporting framework, such as a specialized scientific conference in the field of sports, along with artistic performances and diverse cultural events, enabling delegations to explore different aspects of Egyptian society and cultural life.
The spokesperson added that the participating delegations will enjoy a comprehensive experience during their stay in Egypt, including organized trips and field visits to cultural and tourist landmarks, foremost among them the Egyptian Museum, thereby presenting a complete picture of Egyptian civilization and heritage to participants from across Africa.
Abdel Ghaffar emphasized that this diversity of activities makes the “Cairo 2026” Games an exceptional experience, combining sports, culture, arts, and tourism, while leveraging the wide popularity of university sports to strengthen communication among African youth and highlight Egypt’s civilizational and touristic assets.
The event gains special significance as it coincides with the African University Sports Federation’s celebration of its 55th anniversary since its establishment in 1971. The program will include a commemorative ceremony reviewing the federation’s journey and the development of university sports in Africa, along with honoring prominent figures and pioneers who contributed to advancing the African university sports movement.
These activities are expected to provide an opportunity to showcase the history of African university sports, enhance communication among institutions, universities, and youth across the continent, while simultaneously presenting Egyptian civilization and culture to the participating delegations.
