​Egypt has secured approval to export aquaculture products to the European Union for the first time, opening the door to a major new market for its seafood industry, the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) said. The breakthrough follows years of technical preparations, including the rollout of a nationwide system to monitor veterinary drug residues, one of the EU’s key food safety requirements.

The decision is expected to be formally adopted in the third quarter of 2026 and will come into force 20 days after ratification. The approval covers finfish and related products, along with crustaceans, giving Egyptian producers access to one of the world’s largest and most tightly regulated food markets.

Officials said Egypt is now moving to complete final regulatory steps ahead of implementation. These include certifying production facilities, strengthening traceability systems, and expanding laboratory testing capacity to meet EU standards. Authorities are also preparing compliance frameworks for composite food products, which contain multiple ingredients such as dairy or other animal-based components, in line with European import rules.
