Egypt’s Cabinet approved on Wednesday a draft decree
extending remote work on Sundays throughout May as part of national efforts to
reduce energy consumption.
The measure comes amid pressure on global energy
supplies linked to the ongoing war in Iran, which started on February 28,
disrupting markets and driving up energy prices worldwide.
The decision extends the provisions of Prime
Ministerial Decree No. 982 of 2026, which mandates one day of remote work per
week.
It applies to employees in both the public and private
sectors covered by the decision, with exceptions for roles that require
in-person attendance.
Egypt introduced the measure late in March as part of
a broader set of steps aimed at cutting energy use, including reducing street
and road lighting.
Meanwhile, the government scrapped an earlier measure
requiring the early closure of shops, malls and restaurants, restoring normal
operating hours nationwide following a meeting of the Central Crisis Management
Committee on Sunday.
