Local Development Minister announces delivery of 20 electric buses to Transport Ministry

Minister of Local Development Dr Manal Awad announced the delivery of 20 electric buses to be integrated into the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network on the Ring Road. The step is a collaborative effort with MCV and aims to offer a modern, clean, and more efficient public transportation service for citizens.

The step also came under the "Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project".   The project is launched in cooperation with the World Bank and aligns with the state's efforts to upgrade public transportation services, improve air quality, and reduce emissions. The project is expected to achieve direct environmental gains and better services for citizens and support the development of a more sustainable transport system across Greater Cairo.

Awad also said that integrating electric buses into the public transportation network represents a practical model for turning the state's environmental, climate, and sustainable development goals into tangible projects and services that benefit citizens. She added that the project is funded by World Bank support initiatives that help reduce emissions and improve quality of life, stressing that the BRT system marks a major step forward in upgrading public transportation services by reducing reliance on conventional fossil fuel-powered transport and mitigating the pollution resulting from it.

The minister further explained that the deployment of electric buses reflects the state's commitment to expanding sustainable transportation solutions that achieve environmental, economic, and social benefits while providing citizens with a modern, safe, and highly efficient mode of transportation.

For his part, Dr Mohammad Hassan, National Coordinator of the Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project, stated that the delivery of the electric buses falls within the project's third component, which focuses on promoting low-emission transport solutions and improving air quality across Greater Cairo. He added that the project extends beyond the deployment of electric buses to include the development of the technical capacities required for operating and maintaining this advanced technology through specialized training programs implemented in cooperation with MCV, thereby ensuring sustainable operations and maximizing the benefits of the electric transport system.

Hassan added that the buses have been equipped in accordance with the latest international technical standards to meet the operational requirements of the BRT system, delivering the highest levels of efficiency, safety, and reliability. He affirmed that the project continues to work in coordination with relevant stakeholders to support the transition toward a low-emission economy and advance sustainable development goals.

This milestone reflects the fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Local Development and Environment, the Ministry of Transport, development partners, and the private sector, underscoring the success of integrated national efforts in implementing development projects. The transition to sustainable transportation is no longer solely an environmental objective but a practical pathway toward improving services, enhancing quality of life, and creating a cleaner environment for citizens.
