Egypt
has won a seat on the General Assembly of the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) following elections held last Friday in London. This marks
Egypt’s sixth consecutive victory and its 23rd election to the IMO since
joining the organization.
Egypt secured a seat
in Category (c), which includes 20 countries with special interests in maritime
transport or navigation and whose presence on the Council ensures fair
representation of all major geographical regions.
The newly elected
Council is scheduled to convene for its 136th session on 4 December, during
which it will elect its Chair and Vice-Chair for the upcoming biennium.
Egyptian Minister of
Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, emphasized the significance of Egypt’s membership in
the IMO Council, noting the country’s leading role in maritime transport. He
highlighted Egypt’s strategic geographic location at the heart of global trade
routes, its long coastlines along the Mediterranean and Red Seas, and the
presence of the Suez Canal—one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes.
He added that Egypt
is witnessing substantial development across all its seaports, with the aim of
transforming them into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit
trade, in line with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
