Cairo Gov. supervises demolition of Zelzal Street Market in Mokattam
Cairo
Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber supervised the demolition of the informal street
market on 9th Street in the Mokattam neighborhood and the relocation of vendors
to the newly established markets by the Tahya Misr Fund in the Mokattam neighborhood: Amar ibn Yasser and
Abdel Maguid Mahmoud.
The new modern
markets were established in accordance with the directives of President Abdel
Fattah El-Sisi to eliminate informal settlements and create urban spaces for
vendors in organized markets.
Governor Saber said
the informal Zelzal Market lacks health standards and has become a significant
source of pollution. Additionally, it lacks civil defense measures due to the
prevalence of unauthorized electrical connections, which pose a threat to the
market, its residents, and the surrounding area.
Saber added that
space will be allocated in the new markets for all vendors from the old market,
emphasizing that no vendor will be adversely affected. The state is committed
to preserving their livelihoods while ensuring they have a safe environment in
which they conduct their business.
Moreover, Saber stated that all development
projects initiated by the state are designed to enhance the quality of life for
citizens. He emphasized the state's commitment to establishing new, diverse,
and fully serviced modern markets in neighborhoods to address unregulated
informal markets, reduce violations by street vendors, prevent encroachments on
sidewalks and public roads, and alleviate traffic congestion. Additionally,
these efforts aim to create a more civilized environment for both vendors and
shoppers.
Saber further stated
that the Ammar ibn Yasser and Abdel Meguid Mahmoud markets, to which vendors
were relocated, are equipped with automatic alarm systems and firefighting
systems. These markets are supported by comprehensive safety and protection
measures, along with the necessary utilities, including water, electricity, and
sewage services.
The Ammar bin Yasser
Modern Market spans an area of 5 feddans and features an administrative
building along with 95 shops, each measuring 18 square meters. These shops
offer various products, including vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, poultry,
groceries, spices, eggs, baked goods, and grilled foods, as well as detergents
and plastics. Additionally, the market includes four diverse bakeries, 20
external shops, a cafeteria, two mobile grills, a shaded area, and five parking
spaces. In contrast, the Abdul Maguid Mahmoud Market consists of four shopping
malls with a total of 222 shops and a cafeteria.
The governor was
accompanied by Deputy Cairo Governor Ashraf Mansour; Waleed Abu El-Nasr, Head
of the Cleaning, Beautification, and Lighting General Authority; Chief of the
Mokattam District Waleed Mohammad Shawki; and several officials from the Cairo
governorate.
