About

6 July 2024

Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber conducted Saturday an inspection tour of Pottery Village in Fustat to follow up on ongoing preparations for organizing 40 exhibitions and bazaars to showcase products of the Pottery Village in Fustat, Old Cairo.

During his tour, the governor asserted the state pays great attention to the village, which includes 152 pottery workshops on an area of 13 acres, as pottery craftsmanship is one of the oldest crafts in the world, practiced by the ancient Egyptians.

Saber also said the current exhibitions in the village are designed in the pottery style. The opinions of the village workers regarding the required specifications and the area of each exhibition have been surveyed to match their needs before implementation.

Moreover, Saber pointed out the development works carried out in the Pottery Village included connecting all utilities (water- gas- electricity-sewage) in addition to installing eco-friendly ovens as an alternative to primitive ones, and installing auto-ignition ovens in the rest of the workshops in the village.

The development also included increasing the efficiency of the buildings and installing landscape as well as side shelves on the walls of each workshop to display the products aesthetically. Furthermore, a school has been established to teach pottery to preserve the profession.

Saber added the governorate is seeking to put Fustat Pottery Village on the map of tourist destinations and programs to promote the sale of pottery products at the local and international levels, especially since this type of activity will play a significant role in boosting tourism in the area that includes the Religious Complex, the Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and the ongoing establishment of the Fustat Hills Park.

During his tour, Saber met with several potters in the village, also known as the "jewelers of clay," who have excelled in pottery making to the extent that the Pottery Village has become a haven for pottery enthusiasts.

The governor was accompanied by Deputy Cairo Governor Ashraf Mansour, Assistant Secretary-General Yahia El-Adghm, Director of Cairo Housing Directorate Basem Omara, Chief of Misr El-Qadima District Ayman El-Said, Director of the Pottery Village Maged Fawzy, and several officials of Cairo governorate.
