Cairo Governorate calls on citizens to Participate in the ‘Greening Cairo ‘Initiative

Cairo Governorate has called on citizens, school and university students, businessmen, companies, banks, civil society organizations, environmental NGOs, public, private, and non-profit universities, academies, and institutes to participate in the governorate's collaborative plan to implement President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's "Greening Cairo" Initiative, alongside ongoing tree planting efforts carried out by the governorate and Cairo’s General Authority for Cleanliness, Beautification, and Lighting across the capital.

Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber said that everyone can take part in greening the capital in accordance with a scientifically developed plan backed with the support of experts and specialists to select tree species adapted to Egypt’s climate. The plan also focuses on shade‑providing, low‑water‑consumption trees in line with the governorate's efforts to improve the urban environment and reduce pollution.

The governor added that a range of tree species adapted to Cairo’s environmental conditions were selected to be planted across the city's neighborhoods, including Acacia Nilotica, Khaya, Camel's Foot Tree, Tecoma, Poinciana, Golden Shower Tree, Jacaranda, and Lebbek. Plant species will be selected in accordance with the specific characteristics and needs of each neighborhood, and maintenance activities will be organized in coordination with the relevant authorities, he added.

Citizens can participate in the “Greening Cairo” Initiative by purchasing trees from nurseries operated by the Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority, with discounts reaching 60 percent.

The governor further stated that citizens may plant trees in front of their houses and shops, ensuring a spacing of four to five meters between each tree. They may also get assistance from specialists at the Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority after purchasing the trees.

Saber also stated that the governorate is working to utilize all available spaces, following the directives of Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouli to convert vacant and underutilized spaces in accordance with the characteristics of each site into green spaces and parks to serve residents and provide recreational spaces within urban areas.

The governor added that it is important to engage the local community in protecting and maintaining trees, given it is a shared responsibility between executive bodies and citizens. He also said that tree planting efforts are being integrated into a comprehensive plan aimed at improving quality of life and urban appearance, reducing pollution, and promoting a healthier urban environment.
