Salah El-Din Citadel

The Citadel of Saladin is located in the “Al-Qalaa” district, which falls under the Khalifa administrative area. It was built on one of the hills separated from the Mokattam Mountain, overlooking the outskirts of Cairo. The Citadel of Saladin, also known as the Citadel of the Mountain, is one of the most important landmarks of Islamic Cairo. Unlike any traditional fortress, its unique design has made it one of Cairo’s most important tourist attractions.

The Military Museum

The Military Museum is located inside the Citadel of Saladin on Salah Salem Street. The Military Museum at the Citadel was inaugurated on November 20, 1949. In the past, the building was a palace designated as the residence of Muhammad Ali Pasha and his family. The museum contains a large number of halls that tell the proud military history of the Egyptian army, from the Pharaonic era to the modern era.

Mohamed Ali Mosque

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali is located in the Citadel of the Mountain in Cairo and is the most famous landmark of the Citadel. It is also known as the Alabaster Mosque, named after the rare type of marble used to cover it. Muhammad Ali Pasha began constructing the mosque in 1246 AH / 1830 AD, and work continued until his death in 1265 AH / 1849 AD. He was buried in the tomb he had prepared for himself inside the mosque.

Al-Gawhara Palace

The Gawhara Palace is located inside the Citadel of Saladin, next to the Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, also known as the Citadel of Muhammad Ali. The palace was built in 1814 and includes a special wing for receiving and accommodating visitors. It was also used as a residence for governors. The palace was later converted into a museum.

The Archaological Garden Museum

The Archaeological Garden Museum is located within the Citadel of Saladin. An open-air archaeological garden museum was established on an area of 9,000 square meters, featuring Islamic antiquities. The museum contains columns, capitals, and large storage jars from the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods, in addition to a collection of tombstones bearing inscriptions in Kufic and Naskh scripts. It also includes doors and historical commemorative plaques.

The National Police Museum

The  National Police Museum is located in the northwestern part of the Citadel of Saladin, in an area that was once known as Al-Alam Square. The Police Museum was inaugurated in 1406 AH / January 25, 1986. The museum features exhibits about notable heroes, such as Adham Al-Sharqawi and the officers of the Ismailia Battle, as well as famous criminals, including the “Upper Egypt Outlaw,” the “Alexandria Serial Killer,” and Raya and Sakina.

The Royal Vehicle Museum

This museum is located inside the Citadel of Saladin. It was inaugurated in 1983. The museum consists of a single hall displaying eight carriages that were used on official occasions in Egypt during the rule of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. Perhaps the most important of these carriages is the one used by the Empress of France, Eugénie, during her visit to Egypt to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Suez Canal on November 17, 1869.
