Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber inaugurated the second phase of renovations at Hussein University Hospital, valued at LE one billion. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Dr. Salama Dawood, president of Al-Azhar University; Khaled Seddik, chairman of the Urban Development Fund; Dr. Mohammad Seddik, vice president of the university; Dr. Hussein Abu El-Gheit, dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Boys at Al-Azhar University; Dr. Ayman Abdel Ghani, deputy of Al-Azhar; Dr. Ahmed Abdel Gelil, director of Hussein University Hospital; along with several officials from the Cairo Governorate and Al-Azhar University.
Governor Saber stated that the Egyptian government places great importance on developing the healthcare system and enhancing the quality of medical services provided to citizens, in accordance with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. He added that the ongoing development projects at Al-Hussein University Hospital represent a significant advancement in the health sector and contribute to improving the quality of medical care offered to patients, especially since the hospital is one of the largest medical and educational institutions serving citizens from multiple governorates.
The second phase involved expanding outpatient clinics from 36 to 74 and upgrading inpatient departments, including orthopedics, plastic surgery, burns, hepatology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, and vascular surgery. It also encompassed renovating the emergency department, establishing a new power station with an 8.8-megawatt capacity, creating a central camera unit, and enhancing the central air-conditioning system.
The renovations also provided the hospital with a new cardiac catheterization unit, costing 180 million pounds, and a linear accelerator for cancer treatment, costing LE 240 million. Furthermore, the hospital's façades were upgraded to harmonize with the architectural character of the Al-Hussein district, in accordance with President El-Sisi's directives to coordinate building façades and fences to integrate with the area's architectural and historical identity.
The Egyptian House of Zakat and Charity, under the auspices of Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and supervised by Dr. Sahar Nasr, Secretary-General of the Zakat and Charity House, contributed to the development of the integrated care unit by increasing the number of beds from 12 to 36. Preparations are also underway to inaugurate a new kidney failure and dialysis building, which will accommodate 68 dialysis machines instead of 16, ensuring the highest efficiency in service delivery.
Al-Hussein University Hospital currently has 1,047 beds, 44 operating rooms, and 98 intensive care units. It receives approximately 37,000 patients annually, 69% of whom are critical cases. The hospital provides its services free of charge or through state-funded treatment and health insurance, underscoring its vital role in delivering healthcare to citizens.
