Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber said that the executive plan for President Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi’s “Greening Cairo” initiative is based on a collaborative strategy comprising three pillars: government bodies—represented by Cairo’s General Authority for Cleanliness, Beautification, and Lighting; civil associations—led by the Regional Union of NGOs, alongside banks and political parties; and citizens—including shop owners, school students, and university students.
Governor Saber added that the plan proceeds on two parallel tracks: raising awareness of the importance of tree planting and increasing green areas. boosting tree planting along thoroughfares and streets.
The governor’s remarks came during the Cairo Executive Council meeting, attended by deputy governors, directorate directors, district chiefs, senior officials, and representatives of NGOs and civil society.
Saber also said that clear criteria will be observed in selecting trees and plants, including fast growth, adequate shade, resilience to climatic conditions, and compatibility with sustainable irrigation methods to safeguard greenery and optimize water use. Trees will be offered at reduced prices, urging citizens and shop owners to plant them in front of their buildings.
Saber further said that the plan will be implemented scientifically, backed by a specialized consultancy to select species adapted to Egypt’s climate, focusing on shade‑providing, low‑water‑consumption trees.
Meanwhile, Head of the Cairo Cleanliness and Beautification Authority Mahmoud Abu Beh stated that the plan prepared by the engineering office has already begun implementation, with 2,800 trees planted and nearly 600,000 shrubs and plants. The target is 60,000 trees this year (1,500 per district), in addition to 800,000 shrubs and plants, aiming to reach one million plants.
Species to be planted include Acacia, Nidusa, Khaya, Camel’s Foot, Poinciana, Cassia Fistula, and Jacaranda, with selections tailored to the nature of each district.
