The Ministry of Health and Population announced the commencement of procedures to establish a bone marrow transplant unit at Coptic Hospital, affiliated with the Therapeutic Institution, with support from the petroleum sector as part of its community initiatives and within the framework of the social responsibility strategy of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, stated that a cooperation protocol had been signed between the Therapeutic Institution and South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company to establish and equip an integrated bone marrow transplant unit at Coptic Hospital in Cairo.

The protocol was signed by Dr. Mohamed Shokweir, Chairman of the Board of the Therapeutic Institution, and Dr. Samir Raslan, Chairman of South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company, in the presence of Major General Ahmed Maher, Head of the Central Administration for Social Responsibility at the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Dr. Sherif Wadie, Advisor to the Minister of Health for Intensive Care Affairs; and a number of officials from both sides.

The project aims to support and develop medical services provided to patients by establishing a specialized unit that will increase capacity and provide services in accordance with the highest standards, thereby helping alleviate the burden on patients and their families by reducing waiting lists for bone marrow transplant surgeries.

Dr. Sherif Wadie emphasized the importance of such strategic partnerships in supporting urgent healthcare services. He praised Coptic Hospital as one of the country’s longstanding medical institutions, highlighting its distinguished scientific and historical standing. He noted that the protocol reflects the mutual commitment to expanding access to integrated healthcare in accordance with the highest quality standards.

Dr. Mohamed Shokweir, for his part, affirmed that the Therapeutic Institution is pursuing continuous development across all its hospitals. He noted that bone marrow transplantation is being introduced for the first time as part of a comprehensive plan to modernize medical departments, with ongoing support from Minister of Health and Population Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, in order to strengthen the institution’s role as a vital component of the healthcare system.

Dr. Samir Raslan said that the implementation of the bone marrow transplant unit comes as part of the petroleum sector’s commitment to directing its community initiatives toward priority areas with a direct impact on citizens’ lives, particularly healthcare. He highlighted the integration of efforts between the petroleum sector and state institutions to channel resources toward development projects that deliver tangible impact, in line with the “Egypt Vision 2030.”

Dr. Ghada Ali, Rapporteur of the Higher Committee for Resource Development, explained that the protocol represents the first outcome of the “Energy for Human Health” initiative, launched under the “Partners in Impact” program. She described it as a qualitative shift from traditional forms of support toward sustainable strategic partnerships aimed at securing continuous self-generated resources that directly contribute to developing infrastructure and enhancing patient care.
