The Ministry of Health and Population launched a multisectoral workshop to assess progress in managing antimicrobial-resistant microbes, identify gaps and areas for improvement, prioritize the necessary actions, and gradually move toward more advanced levels of risk management in line with the One Health approach.
The workshop is being held under the One Health framework and involves implementing the Advanced Pathways Tool for managing antimicrobial-resistant microbes. It is part of Egypt’s efforts to strengthen the national response to antimicrobial resistance under the National One Health Strategy 2023–2027, in coordination with various relevant authorities and sectors to ensure integrated efforts and strengthen governance and multisectoral coordination.
Dr. Amr Kandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, stressed the importance of combating antimicrobial-resistant microbes, noting that significant steps have been taken, most notably the development of the 2023 national plan focused on supporting infection prevention and control measures, promoting the rational use of antimicrobials, and strengthening surveillance and microbiology laboratory capacities.
He added that 99 hospitals nationwide, covering all governorates, government entities, and the private sector, have been included in the program. Five hospitals have received international accreditation in antimicrobial resistance prevention and control, including three designated as centers of excellence and international cooperation. Egypt’s infection control program was also classified in the highest category (E) according to the World Health Organization’s report at the end of 2024. In addition, the WHO published the Egyptian program as a model country case in its guidance manual issued in June 2025, highlighting it as an example of national coordination and integration to combat antimicrobial resistance.
Dr. Rady Hamad, Head of the Preventive Medicine and Public Health Sector, emphasized the importance of the workshop in integrating efforts through partnerships with relevant authorities. He noted the development and dissemination of the One Health strategy for communication on antimicrobial-resistant microbes, as well as the identification of a research agenda comprising 15 priority scientific topics and the pilot launch of a joint surveillance system.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Local Development, Environment, and Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as the Egyptian Drug Authority and the National Food Safety Authority, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization Country Office in Egypt.
