Monorail
Egypt is working to keep pace with development across all fields. After beginning the construction of numerous development and residential projects throughout the country, the state has started implementing the Monorail project, which is expected to create a major transformation in the transportation system in Cairo and the New Administrative Capital.
The East and West Nile Monorail lines represent, for the first time in the Arab Republic of Egypt, a new technological leap in the field of electrically powered rail transportation. It is considered one of the safe, fast, and environmentally friendly mass transit systems.

What you need to know about the monorail
What is the Monorail?
The Monorail is an electric train that runs on a single rail. The rail is built on an elevated concrete beam above ground level and away from road intersections. As an environmentally friendly mode of transport, the Monorail produces no exhaust emissions like conventional trains. It is also fast and safe, enabling efficient travel across the city while reducing traffic congestion and environmental pollution.
First: East Nile Monorail
The East Nile Monorail serves Nasr City, New Cairo, and the New Administrative Capital, making it easier for commuters traveling from Cairo and Giza to New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital.
The line extends from Field Marshal Tantawi Station to Justice City Station in the New Administrative Capital, with an operational speed of 80 km/h.
It connects with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) at Arts and Culture City Station in the New Administrative Capital, and in the future will connect with Metro Line 6 at El Narges Station in New Cairo and Phase Two of Metro Line 4 at Hesham Barakat Station in Nasr City.
Second: West Nile Monorail
The West Nile Monorail serves the major urban expansions in 6th of October City, including social housing projects, southern development projects, and other southern expansions.
The line extends from 6th of October City to Wadi El Nile Station in Mohandessin, covering 43.8 km and including 13 key stations: (New October
Ahram Canadian University - Sadat - 6th of October University - Engineers Syndicate - Mall of Egypt - Sheikh Zayed City
Alexandria Road - Mansouria - Mariouteya - Ring Road - Bashteel - Wadi El Nile).
The project is being implemented by an international and local consortium that includes Alstom and Arab Contractors, and has an operational speed of 80 km/h.
The West Nile Monorail will interchange with Metro Line 3 at Wadi El Nile Station, the Upper Egypt Railway Station at Bashteel Station, the High-Speed Rail (Ain Sokhna–Marsa Matrouh) at Engineers Syndicate Club Station, and, in the future, Phase Three of Metro Line 4 at 6th of October University Station.
Objective of Implementing the East and West Nile Monorail Project
- Provide a fast, modern, safe, and environmentally friendly means of public transportation for passengers.
- Support sustainable development east of the Nile in line with Egypt Vision 2030, as the transportation network is a key driver of urban and economic development.
- Generate economic benefits by reducing fuel consumption, lowering environmental pollution, easing traffic congestion on major roads, and encouraging people to use public transport instead of private cars, while also creating direct and indirect job opportunities during construction and permanent employment during operation.
