Bus Rapid Transit

  • Access to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations on the Ring Road will be through a pedestrian tunnel or footbridge.

What you need to know about the shuttle bus

What is the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)?

It is a large electric bus that operates on dedicated lanes along the Ring Road. The route length will be 106 km (with the possibility of extension). The Ministry of Transport decided to establish it in Egypt with the aim of reducing traffic congestion on the Ring Road.

Project Importance, Objectives, and Advantages

  • Reducing environmental pollution.
  • The number of buses can be increased.
  • Serving as an alternative to the fifth metro line.
  • Reducing traffic congestion on the Ring Road.
  • Providing an alternative to minibuses operating on the Ring Road.
  • Providing high-quality services for passengers.
  • The BRT speed is comparable to that of metro and railway trains.
  • The bus will operate 24 hours a day through three work shifts.
  • Parking areas for private cars will be established beneath BRT stations.
  • Service roads will be created to connect minibus stops with the new BRT stations.
  • Operating 100 electric buses along the route and connecting them with other transportation modes, including service vehicle stops beneath the Ring Road, as well as the metro, trains, and SuperJet buses.
  • The project consists of 49 stations along the Ring Road, including 36 stations in the first phase, with an estimated cost of approximately 9.5 billion EGP.
  • The first phase included expanding the road sections from Mariouteya/Mounib Axis to Alexandria Agricultural Road, and from the Mansouria Road/Fayoum Road intersection to the Wahat Road intersection, with a total length of 76 km.
  • The first phase of the BRT will operate along the 76 km of the first Ring Road expansion phase. The second phase will begin after completing station expansions as part of the second Ring Road development phase, with further expansions of the BRT system planned in future stages.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Charging Stations

The Ministry of Transport aims to implement four electric charging stations along the Ring Road to charge the buses that will operate on the route. Preliminary designs indicate the establishment of two main charging centers at the beginning and end of the line, in addition to providing electrical charging services at the other stations where buses stop for passenger boarding and alighting.

One of the charging stations is planned to be located at Adly Mansour Metro Station, while the remaining stations will be implemented along the BRT stations on the Ring Road.
