Egypt
is bracing for hot, dusty, strong winds on Wednesday as a khamsin depression is
expected to sweep across the country, according to the Egyptian Meteorological
Authority (EMA).
Egypt will experience a
sharp rise in temperatures, with the mercury expected to increase by four to
five degrees Celsius on Wednesday alone, the EMA added.
The authority also expects
rain of varying intensity, likely accompanied by thunder, to fall on the
country's northern areas during the day.
The khamsin, a seasonal
weather phenomenon that occurs between February and June, originates in desert
regions. It pushes hot, dry air northward across Mediterranean countries,
including Egypt.
The name khamsin comes from
the Arabic word for "fifty" and refers to the roughly 50-day period
during which these strong winds typically occur each year.
On Wednesday, Greater Cairo and Lower Egypt
are expected to see highs of 33 degrees and lows of 17 degrees.
From Thursday to Saturday,
temperatures in Greater Cairo are expected to drop, reaching highs of 27-28
degrees and lows of 16-17 degrees.
