Culture Min., Cairo Gov. inaugurate ‘Egyptian Heritage House’ in Fustat

Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal attended Sunday,
August 20, Minister of Culture Nevin El-Kilany’s inauguration of “The Egyptian
Heritage House” at the Fustat Traditional
Crafts Center. The inauguration comes in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional
Office in Cairo and marks the 20th anniversary of signing the Convention for
Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Also in attendance were Deputy Cairo Governor
Jihan Abdel Moneim, Director of the UNESCO Cairo Office Dr. Nuria Sanz, Chairman
of the National Organization for Urban Harmony Mohammad Abu Saada, several Arab
and foreign ambassadors, and representatives of heritage conservation
organizations.
During the inauguration ceremony, Abdel Aal
emphasized that the Cairo governorate pays full attention to preserving and
protecting intangible cultural heritage while focusing on community
participation in all intangible heritage elements to achieve sustainability.
The celebration included an exhibition of
heritage crafts, Arabic calligraphy, handmade textiles, pottery, ceramics, and
other heritage crafts. There was also a display of living heritage, such as the
traditional crafts industry. Traditional food and drinks were also served to
convey knowledge related to Egyptian heritage.
The Egyptian Heritage House, inaugurated at the
Fustat Traditional Crafts Center,
houses the contents of National Archives of Intangible Cultural Heritage, given
that Egypt was one of the first countries to sign the UNESCO Intangible
Heritage Convention 20 years ago.
